A Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in Kalamazoo, MI, that’s changed hands a few times in recent years recently returned to the market.
This time, the Usonian-style home, priced at $445,000, is fresh off a restoration. The work included restoration of the living room’s original fireplace, the addition of quartz countertops to the kitchen, and a fresh polish to the clerestory perforated block windows.
The current owners snapped up the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home back in 2018 for $300,000. They purchased it from owners who had bought the home in 2012 for just $225,000. From 2005 to 2012, yet another owner served as the steward.
Finished in 1951, the 1,671-square-foot home sits on a 1.12-acre lot, and each of its wings is triangular. Built for Ward and Helen McCartney and described in the listing details as “quintessential Usonian,” it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
In addition to the recently restored areas of the home, other key Wright features include a hipped roof, cantilevered, 18-foot eaves, walls of glass in nearly every room, concrete blocks of Wright’s own design, and African mahogany woodwork.

For an architecture buff, living in a neighborhood of other Wright-designed homes—the name of the subdivision is Parkwyn Village—could be a dream.
Much like The Acres in Galesburg, which is only 15 miles away, this planned community is anchored by Wright’s designs. Wright completed four Usonian-style homes in Parkwyn Village. Both communities were established in 1947 by groups of scientists.
This house even sits on Taliesin Drive, a nod to Wright’s estate, Taliesin, in Spring Green, WI, as well as to his winter home (Taliesin West) in Scottsdale, AZ.
One of the other homes in Parkwyn Village built in 1954 sold in 2020 for $365,000. Although it was not designed by Wright, it’s believed that his work inspired the concept, including its carport, wood and brick interiors, and slate flooring.
Included with the McCartney home are original blueprints, four triangular tables designed by Wright, and two watercolor paintings by Helen McCartney. For a woodworker or DIYer, the excess wood used for the home’s recent remodel is also included.
Located in Southern Michigan, Kalamazoo is home to Western Michigan University and around 75,000 residents. Lake Michigan’s shoreline is 38 miles to the west and Ann Arbor a 90-minute drive to the east.
