a modernist masterpiece in los angeles
A 1962-built residence designed by modernist master Richard Neutra is soon to be listed for sale through Sotheby’s International Realty. As he is known largely for his works across Southern California, the so-called J.N. Baldwin house exemplifies the Austrian-American architect’s legacy with its location in Woodland Hills. Carefully sited at the end of a long curving driveway on a private hilltop surrounded by a cluster of lemon and orange trees, the project maximizes privacy. While nestled out of site from neighbors, the home opens broadly outward through the architect’s signature ribbon windows toward distant panoramic vistas.

a richard neutra house for the 21st century
Richard Neutra’s Baldwin House is surrounded by a verdant, newly landscaped yard featuring a large swimming pool and a new bamboo deck which can be accessed through Neutra’s sliding wall off the living room. The updated house is illuminated at night with freshly updated exterior lighting.
Inside, the house offers four bedrooms and three full baths. The kitchen has been updated in 2020 with appliances by Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, and Gaggenau, along with sinks and hardware by Julien and Dornbracht. Even Neutra’s original chalk drawings, blueprints, and construction book are available for view.

The sellers — stylist Jeanne Yang and her husband, Sotheby’s International Realty agent Scott Cort — write that the listing is ‘an extremely rare offering of a chic, tastefully done, pedigree modernist home, updated and ready for the 21st century.’ Coming soon, the Richard Neutra-designed Baldwin House will list on Sotheby’s for $3.3 million USD.
